Before seeing the car

Confirm the VIN, mileage, trim, advertised price, title status, and seller identity. Obtain a history report and search the VIN for open recalls. Ask whether the vehicle is available and whether the photos show the actual car.

For a dealer vehicle, request the out-the-door price in writing and ask for a copy or photo of the FTC Buyer’s Guide.

At the vehicle

Match the VIN on the dashboard, door label, and paperwork. Inspect body-panel alignment, paint variation, glass, lights, tires, underbody, cabin wear, fluid leaks, odors, and signs of water intrusion.

Verify keys, manuals, charging cable if applicable, spare or mobility kit, and every advertised feature. Equipment descriptions are not always accurate.

Inspection and test drive

Arrange an independent inspection by a qualified mechanic. A history report is not a substitute. If the seller refuses an inspection, consider a different vehicle.

During the drive, evaluate acceleration, shifting, braking, steering, vibration, noise, visibility, seating position, and driver-assistance behavior in safe conditions.

Before signing

Reconcile the contract with the written quote. Review price, fees, add-ons, trade, down payment, amount financed, APR, term, total of payments, warranty, and any return policy.

Get every promise in writing. The FTC notes there is no general federal three-day cancellation right for dealer vehicle purchases.
