Choose the charging level for the job

Level 1 uses a common household outlet and is the slowest option. It can cover short daily driving when the car remains plugged in for many hours. Level 2 uses higher-voltage equipment and is the common faster home and destination option. DC fast charging is intended for rapid public charging on compatible vehicles.

Charging speed is not fixed: the vehicle, charger, battery temperature, battery state of charge, and site power all matter. Compare the vehicle’s accepted connector and maximum charging rate with the equipment you plan to use.

Install home charging safely

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends having qualified electrical professionals assess and install home charging equipment as needed. Local permits, electrical codes, panel capacity, circuit size, cable routing, and outdoor ratings are real safety constraints.

Do not assume an existing outlet is suitable for continuous charging. Have the full circuit and connection evaluated, particularly in an older home or a garage with shared electrical loads.

Make charging routine
